The production of doors has reached new levels at Bayer Built Woodworks, a two-step distributor of millwork, selling exclusively to more than 850 building product retailers in the upper mid-west United States. Located in Belgrade, MN, this family-run company has over 250 team members and over 375,000 square feet of space.
Bayer is a leading provider of interior and exterior pre-hung doors, stair systems, and architectural millwork. Bayer, a highly progressive company, was looking for a safer, faster and more accurate inventory and material handling system in an effort to complement their credo of providing “unbelievable customer service”.
After investigating various systems, Holz-Her US was chosen to provide this solution. The new system, installed November 2013, addresses pre-finished interior and exterior doors. It provides accurate automated loading and computerized control of inventory. The software interfaces with Bayer’s customer service order entry ERP which allows the retrieval of doors from inventory to fulfill customer orders.
Engineering collaboration for this solution included teams from Bayer’s various departments, Holz-Her US; Barbaric AG; and Advantage Solutions. The result is a system that provides a highly-automated and efficient inventory and retrieval system. It includes over 650 individual bunks of doors and stock of over 15,000 door blanks. Over 2,200 doors fulfill customer orders daily.
The systems have drastically improved accuracy of inventory, order picks, better utilization of floor space, eliminated damage to door blanks from transport and improved inventory control.
